Monica Quan and Keith Lawrence Scholarship

The North South Tournament in conjunction with the Law Enforcement Association of Asian Pacifics (LEAAP) the presentation of the Monica Quan and Keith Lawrence Scholarship to two outstanding young ladies from this year’s senior class.  This scholarship has been set up in remembrance of North South alumni Monica Quan who was tragically taken from us in February 2013.  One player from each of the North and South teams will be presented a scholarship based on their overall performance, leadership abilities and character shown throughout their years of participation in the North South Tournament.

Monica Quan loved playing in the North South Tournament.  Starting in 1998, Monica became a fixture on the South squad.  For the next 4 years, Monica brought her infectious smile, her tenacious style and her love of basketball to the court.  She was a coach’s dream.  She knew everyone’s job on the court, including hers.  She pushed her teammates to always give their best and she was her opponent’s worst nightmare.  Even though she was a fierce competitor, Monica wanted to be friends with her opponents after the game.

Monica was a star at Walnut High School.  During her career Monica was named team MVP, earned All-CIF, All-Baseline League, all-region awards and was named to Walnut High School’s athletic Hall of Fame.  Quan set school records for the most three-pointers during a season (59) and a game (7).  She averaged 15 points, six assists, three steals and two rebounds a game her senior year.  After graduation, Monica enrolled at Cal State University Long Beach where she played two seasons for the 49ers from 2003 to 2005.  She transferred to Concordia University and was a member of the basketball team from 2005 to 2007.  Quan graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Exercise Sports Science (ESS) in 2007 and a Master’s Degree in Coaching and Athletic Administration (MCAA) in 2009.

During her Master’s studies at Concordia, Monica served as an assistant coach from 2007 – 09.  After graduation from Concordia, Monica worked for a short time as an assistant at Diamond Bar High School.  In 2010, Monica was hired as the lead assistant for the Cal Lutheran University women’s basketball program.   In 2011 Monica took a job with the Cal State Fullerton women’s basketball team and was in the middle of her second season at the time of her death.

Throughout her life Monica was known as a kind and giving person.  She cared about people in general and wanted everyone around her to be happy.   She would argue with anyone that Michael Jordan was the best basketball player ever.  Her favorite place to shop was the Nike Store and her collection of shoes was filled with Jordans and Nikes.  On February 3, 2013 Monica and fiancé of eight days Keith Lawrence were taken from us in a cruel and senseless crime.  This weekend and in every North South Tournament going forward we will remember Monica and Keith by honoring players that exemplified the many positive qualities much like MO.  We are truly honored to be presenting these scholarships through the North South Tournament in Monica Quan’s remembrance.
